  • Jing’an Temple

    Jing’an Temple

Jing’an Temple has been around in at least some form for nearly two millennia. It’s first incarnation was built near the banks of Suzhou Creek in AD 247 during the Warring States Period. It was finally relocated to its current position in 1216 under the Song Dynasty. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over several centuries. In the Republican era, it quickly became the wealthiest temple in Shanghai. At one point, the abbott boasted seven concubines and a White Russian bodyguard. During the Cultural Revolution, the temple was converted into a plastics factory, and it wasn't until 1983 when Deng Xiaoping’s reforms permitted it to re-open for religious purposes. Today it is once again the wealthiest temple in the city. Locals like to go there to pray for wealth, success and high exam scores.

    Bund18

At the centre of the Bund—China’s most sought after waterfront estate—stands Bund18. Formerly the Chinese headquarters for the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, the stunning 1923 column-fronted building built in the popular neo-classical style by British architectural firm, Palmer & Turner.Offering unparalleled panoramic views of the Huangpu River and financial mecca of Shanghai’s financial centre in Pudong, Bund18 has been carefully restored by a team of Venetian architects from Kokaistudios. The two-year renovation project including planning, construction and restoration began in November 2002 and was completed in September 2004. Through the application of modern design to a historic landmark, structural reinforcement, historic restoration, mechanical installation and interior design, Bund18 sets a new standard in Shanghai for heritage revitalization. By creating a new chapter in the life of this unique building the renovation has restored the building’s original architectural vision. More than merely preserving the facade, meticulous research was undertaken in both the interior and exterior of the building so that each point of restoration was carefully considered and executed thus allowing modern amenities to be added without disturbing the original structure or interior design. Bund18 redefines the modern face of Shanghai, establishing a new benchmark for cultural appreciation as well as commercial success. Though preservation came at a considerable cost, the conservation of this heritage property proved vital, winning the 2006 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence for Culture Heritage Conservation.
