Civil residences south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River are famous for fresh and elegant styles and distinctive features. The ancient town of Xitang is a typical example of these dwellings.
Xitang is located in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, between Shanghai and Hangzhou.Though small in size, this ancient town boasts a long history. It was first built in the Spring and Autumn Period , at the border between the states of Wu and Yue. The present layout had already taken place before the Song Dynasty, and the famous Wangxian Bridge is a legacy of the Song. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xitang had become a renowned trade center for farm products, silks and ceramics, all produced in the surrounding areas and famous throughout the country.
Xitang is situated on the shores of Taihu Lake, with the Great Canal passing by it. There are nine winding rivers intersecting the town into eight blocks. Each house is located facing a river, as are the shops. Xitang people row small boats along the rivers to their destinations, instead of walking on foot through streets and lanes.Weeping willows and colorful flowers grow along the riverbanks, and flocks of water birds and white geese play on the water dotted with plants of floatingheart. Several hundred ancient bridages of different shaps and sizes arch over the rivers like crescent moons. Famous bridages include the Wufu, Wolong, Huanxiu, and Songzilaifeng bridages.Walking on the bridages is like walking along streets of the heavens.
Located in Deqing County of Huzhou City in northeastern Zhejiang Province; Mogan Mountain has been listed as one of the 'Four Best Summer Resorts in China' along with Beidaihe Scenic Spot, Mt. Lushan and Jigong Mountain. Covering an area of 43 sq kilometers (about 10,625 acres) and with an average altitude of 500 meters (1,640 ft), Mogan Mountain is famous for its wild bamboo and dispersed villas of different styles and enthralling legends.
Villas hidden in the bamboo forest may surprise the visitors. More than two hundreds villas representing different styles, including European, American, Japanese, Russian, give the name 'World Architecture Museum' to Mogan Mountain. Gothic, Barroque or Rococo, northern and southern European, American and traditional Chinese architectures are scattered on the mountain. Most of the villas were built in the last century and were used by many famous people, such as the former leader of CCP Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, the former leader of Kuomintang Chiang Kai-shek, the former King of Cambodia Norodom Sihanouk and the former Chairman of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh. Now the previous residences are well preserved and open to visitors.
It takes about two hours and a half to drive from Shanghai to Mogan Mountain. Winter is a good season to enjoy the Thoreau-style life in Mogan Mountain as the crystal cold air and few visitors contribute to the tranquility.
The layout of the hotel follows the geomancy tradition of ancient town in Zhejiang. The courtyard walls are tall and painted in elegant colors: white wall, grey bricks and black tiles. The cost the French boss eight years to design and construct. Behind the architectural complexes are the tea garden and the rose garden. The hotel features colorful scenery and fragrance over the mountains in most seasons.
When going inside the room, you will feel the enchanting warm air from the fireplace. Those who have ever stayed in luxury hotels shall be attracted by some details here. For instance, there is some pleasant aroma indoors. It may come from the oak floor, the furniture or the good wine in the cellar. The quality furnishing and decoration make people feel comfortable and natural.
How to Get There:
If you are in Hangzhou, you can take a direct coach to Mogan Mountain at the North Bus Station. The journey takes about one hour. If you are in Shanghai, you can take a train to Hangzhou first, or take a coach to Huzhou from the Old North Bus Station or the New Passenger Station. With a total journey time of two to three hours, you can get off at Mogan Mountain Stop.
